We place a large jar outside the sanctuary after Morning Worship to collect money to honor the birthdays and anniversaries of our church family. This year the money will be given to the Thanka Project in Nepal. Bob X conceived of this project in his work with Buddhists in that country. Bob wrote:
"These Thanka [pronounced ‘Tonka’] paintings are such a powerful tool for reaching Buddhists. Because they have so much reverence for this style of painting, they listen intently, wanting to know the stories behind the art. Almost everyone who sees them immediately believes that this is the truth. The most common response that we get is, ‘Why hasn't anyone told us this before? Our people need to hear this truth.’
At the present we have completed about 45 Thankas, covering most of the Old Testament and the Gospels. As is typical in this style, each Thanka depicts several stories. For example, on one Thanka of the life of Joseph, there are 11 scenes showing different things that happened in his life. Currently the artist is working on two Thankas. One is portraying the Crucifixion and the other covers the resurrection and the time leading up to the ascension. We will use the money from the Birthday Jar to pay for one of these."
